The system of National Law Universities was founded by Neelakanta Ramakrishna Madhava Menon.
- Menon was born in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, on May 4, 1935.
- He started working as a lawyer in 1955. He took the Civil Services Exam, passed it, and was hired by New Delhi’s Central Secretariat.
- Menon earned a master’s in political science (MA) in 1960, a law degree (LLM), and continued his studies in white-collar crime to earn a doctorate in 1965.
- He has also held the position of secretary for both the Law Commission of India and the Bar Council of India Trust.
- The Supreme Court of India appointed him as the first director of the National Judicial Academy, a training center for judges, where he worked till his retirement.
- In 2003, Menon was awarded the Padma Shri, and in 2020 Padma Bhushan by the Government of India.
- Liver cancer caused Menon’s death on 8 May 2019.
