When did the Indian National Congress Split?

The Indian National Congress split at the Surat session in 1907. The Surat Partition was the split of the Indian National Congress (INC) into two groups – Moderates and Extremists. The Indian National Congress was established in 1885 when about 72 delegates from all over the country met in Bombay.

Prominent delegates included Surendranath Banerjee, Dadabhai Naoroji, Badruddin Tyabji, Ramaswami Mudaliar, Pherozeshah Mehta W. C. Bonnerjee, S. S. Subramania, and Romesh Chunder Dutt. A former British civil servant, Englishman Allan Octavian Hume, was one of the founding members of the Indian National Congress. Hume assumed the office of General Secretary, and Womesh Chunder Bonnerjee of Calcutta was elected President.

Moderates:
- For the purpose of making their demands known to the British government, they used petitions, prayers, gatherings, leaflets, pamphlets, memoranda, and delegations.
- The Indian Councils Act of 1892 caused the Legislative Council to grow.
Extremists:
- They supported protests, strikes, and boycotts.
- They included members of the lower middle class.
- They opposed the imperialist practices of the British in India.
- They gave their all, even their lives, to advance the interests of the motherland.
- The boycott of British products and national education resulted in a significant shift in the economy of the nation and provided employment and a number of other opportunities for Indians.
