The Bhabar is an 8-10km wide belt running from East to West along the Himalayan foothills in the Shiwaliks. It is a narrow belt in the East to West direction along the Himalayan foothills. The Bhabar, Bhangar, Khadar, and Terai are the four divisions of the Northern Plains. Of these, the Bhabar is a constricted belt that descends the mountains. It is between 8 and 10 kilometres wide and travels from east to west alongside the Shiwalik foothills.

Short Note on Bhabar in Geography

The Bhabar belt is not suitable for any kind of agricultural activity and is known for having big trees with large roots. They are located on the southern side of Shiwaliks from Jammu to Assam. The Bhabar belt is more prominent in the north-western and western hilly regions and even narrower in the eastern hilly region.

  • Kumaon contains the Bhabar Plains.
  • Bhabar, where streams disappear into permeable sediments, is the gently sloping coarse alluvial zone beneath the Sivalik Hills.
  • The Terai below, where coarse alluvium gives way to less permeable silt and clay, is where the underground water level in this area rises to the surface.
  • To the west is the Ganges River, and to the east is Sharda.
  • Due to its location at the meeting point of the Himalayas and the Indo-Gangetic Plain, Bhabar is home to almost all of Kumaon’s major commercial centres, including Haldwani, the region’s largest city.
  • It is also a fertile area with high yields per unit area because the topsoil is replenished every monsoon.
