What is Article 39A of the Indian Constitution?

As per Article 39A of the Indian Constitution, the state shall secure equal justice for the citizens of India. Additionally, it mandates that the state give free legal assistance to citizens who might not have access to equal legal opportunities because of barriers like poverty or other disadvantages. Using the Forty-second Amendment Act, Article 39A was added to the constitution in 1976.

Article 39A of the Constitution of India
Every citizen of India, regardless of their socio-economic background, is entitled to receive equal justice under Article 39A of the constitution of India. The act also directs the state to provide suitable legislation for citizens who do not have access to legal aid. The Constitution (Forty-second Amendment) Act of 1976 introduced the article.
Article 39 contains certain principles of policy to be followed by the State. The State shall, in particular, direct its policy toward ensuring that:
(a) all citizens, men and women equally, have the right to an adequate means of subsistence;
(b) ownership and control of the community’s material resources are distributed in a way that best serves the common good;
(c) the operation of the economic system does not result in the concentration of wealth and means of production to the detriment of the common good; and
(d) there is equal pay for equal work;
(e) that neither men’s nor women’s health nor strength, nor the impressionable age of children, are exploited, and that citizens are not compelled by economic necessity to engage in occupations that are inappropriate for their strength or age;
(f) that youth and childhood are safeguarded against exploitation and against moral and material abandonment and that children are provided with the facilities and opportunities to develop healthily, in conditions of freedom, and with dignity.
