The Types of Plate Boundaries are Divergent Boundaries, Convergent Boundaries, and Transform Boundaries. A three-dimensional surface where continental plates touch each other is known as a plate boundary. When two tectonic plates diverge, a diverging border is created. As magma (molten rock) rises from the Earth’s mantle to the surface and solidifies to form a new oceanic crust, earthquakes frequently occur along these borders.

What are Plate Boundaries?

The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, for instance, exhibits divergent plate boundaries. A convergent border is a location where two plates meet. Due to the collision, the edges of one or both colliding plates may bow upward into mountain ranges or downward into a deep undersea trench.

Strong earthquakes and a chain of volcanoes frequently form along the edges of converging plate boundaries. The Pacific Ring of Fire is a prime illustration of a converging plate.

Types of Plate Boundaries

Plate borders come in three different varieties. These are as follows:

Divergent Boundaries

  • As the plates separate from one another, a new crust is produced.
  • Spreading sites are the locations where the plates separate from one another.
  • Example: Atlantic Ridge, Middle

Convergent Boundaries

  • As one plate descends beneath another, the crust is destroyed.
  • The area where a plate sink is referred to as a subduction zone.
  • Convergence can happen in three different ways.
  • Between two oceanic plates, two continental plates, and between a marine and a continental plate.

Transform Boundaries

As the plates move horizontally past one another, the crust is neither created nor destroyed.

What are the Types of Plate Boundaries?

Divergent, Convergent, and Transform Boundaries are the three different Types of Plate Boundaries. The plate boundary is a three-dimensional surface where two continental plates meet.
