The stock of resources or simply ‘stock resources’ are those resources that are called non-renewable resources because they can be easily used or distributed. Their quantity is usually expressed not in terms of rates but in absolute quantities.

The best examples of Stock of Resources are coal and petroleum reserves. Water can also be considered a good example of a resource that can be used as a great resource for energy production, but is not being used that way right now due to potential technological unavailability. Hence these resources can be classified as ‘understock’.

Stock Resources

The materials obtained from the environment that has the capacity to fulfill human requirements, but humans cannot use such materials due to lack of the appropriate technology, are included in the stock resources.

For example, water is a compound of two gases; Hydrogen and Oxygen. Hydrogen can be used as a rich source of energy. But we don’t have the advanced technical ‘knowledge’ to use it for this purpose. Therefore, it can be treated as stock.

  • Potential Resources: The potential of such resources has been identified but is yet to be tapped. These have been kept safe for future use. Some non-availability of resources and knowledge or lack of innovation and facilities may also be the reason for the non-utilization of these resources.
  • Developed Resources: The potential, quality, and quantity of these resources have been identified and evaluated and are being utilized.
  • Reserved Resources: These types of resources, as the name suggests, are reserved for future use, and all their quality and quantity have been recognized, but are being kept safe for the future, though all the necessary technology and more facilities are available.
