The Total Organic Matter present in an Ecosystem is called Biomass. It is usually measured as the amount per unit surface area in grams per square meter or metric tons per hectare. In the ecosystem, all organisms are linked via the food chain. Each organism has its own place in it, known as the trophic level. Each of these living organisms that are present on each trophic level has its own mass, which is known as biomass.

Biomass is the organic matter present in our ecosystem. It also serves as a renewable source of energy. The difference in biomass over a given period of time is called net production. It is calculated by subtracting the amount of biomass at the beginning of the time period from the amount of biomass at the end of the time period.
Three steps are involved in the production of biomass. They are the production of organic matter by an organism within its body.
- Some of this new organic matter is used as fuel in respiration and storing newly produced organic matter for future use.
- These organic matters consist of wood, garbage, landfill gases, fuels, crops, etc.
- Biomass energy is seen as a major source of renewable energy that can replace pollution-causing fuels.
