The Champaran Movement was against the indigo planters and was launched after Mahatma Gandhi’s visit in 1917. After returning from South Africa, a Bihari peasant persuaded Mahatma Gandhi to visit Champaran so he could see firsthand the struggles of the indigo farmers there. The Champaran movement was a significant milestone in India’s struggle for independence.

Who was Against Champaran Movement?

It combined elements of the extra-constitutional conflict with the use of moral authority against an adversary, an illustration of the rule of law, and a compromise strategy.

Champaran, a small district in Bihar, has substantial zamindari lands under the control of powerful and affluent landowners.
The zamindars leased out most of the villages to the kedars, who were mainly European indigo planters.
Although the planters had just a brief lease, they had many privileges over the peasants and demanded rent from them.
In Champaran, three kathas of land had to be planted with indigo according to a tinkathia scheme.
The farmers’ ability to provide for their own needs and the amount of money they were paid for the indigo they had planted were insufficient.
Gandhiji had vowed to deal with the problem of agricultural labor.
He arrived in Champaran in 1917, where he established a number of new friends.
However, he had been given instructions that required him to leave the area right away or risk being arrested.
Gandhiji remained in Champaran to address the issue because the government dropped the case due to his non-violent stance.
