BharatNet Project is related to providing Broadband connectivity to rural areas in India. The Government of India has provided viability gap funding support of nearly Rs. 19,041 crores for the implementation of this project through the Public-Private Partnership. It started to provide e-health, e-education, e-governance, e-banking, Internet, and other services to rural India. It was launched to ensure better connectivity of rural areas with the rest of the country.

What does BharatNet Project Provide?
The BharatNet Project is the world’s largest rural broadband connectivity program. The program is implemented by the Bharat Broadband Network Ltd. (BBNL) which is set up by the Government of India under the Companies Act 1956. BharatNet Project earlier was known as National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) which was launched in 2011.
In the third phase, a future-proof network would be created, including fiber between blocks and districts with ring topology by 2023. The Department of Telecommunication under the Ministry of Communication takes care of BharatNet Project.

Following are some crucial details related to the BharatNet Project:
- The project aims to provide affordable broadband connectivity of 2 Mbps to 20 Mbps for all households.
- It was decided to complete the project in three phases. In the first phase, the aim was to connect one lakh gram panchayat with broadband connectivity by laying underground Optic Fibre Cable lines by December 2017.
- In phase two, the objective was to connect all the gram panchayat in the country by fiber over power lines, underground fiber, radio, and satellite media by March 2019.
