Tachometers are used to measure Angular Velocity. It shows the revolutions per minute (RPM) on a calibrated analog dial or on digital displays. It is derived from a Greek word. A tachometer is a device that measures the rate of rotation of a shaft or disk, such as those found in motors or other machines. Although digital displays are becoming more prevalent, the device shows the revolutions per minute on a calibrated analog dial.

Use of Tachometer
In a paper submitted to the Royal Society of Arts in 1810, Donkin described the first tachometer; for this, he was given the society’s Gold Medal. It was a bowl of mercury designed so that when it rotated, the centrifugal force dropped the level in a central tube and raised it in a narrower tube above filled with colored spirit.
By means of pulleys, the bowl was attached to the equipment for measurement. In tractors and trucks, the tachometer often has other markings, usually, a green arc showing the speed range in which the engine produces maximum torque.
- In a motor or other machine, a tachometer is typically used to measure a shaft or disc’s rotation speed (or angular velocity).
- The frequency of the vibrating system is measured using one of two types of tachometers, the Fullarton tachometer or the Frahm tachometer.
- Resonance is the underlying principle that underpins the operation of frequency-measuring devices.
- When an instrument is in resonance, the vibration’s amplitude is found to be at its highest, and the excitation frequency then coincides with the instrument’s natural frequency.

Tachometers are Used to Measure
Angle velocity is measured using tachometers. It displays the revolutions per minute (RPM) on digital displays or a calibrated analog dial. Its origins are in a Greek word. A tachometer is a tool used to gauge the speed at which a shaft or disk, like those found in motors or other machines, rotates. It is used in cars, aircraft, and other vehicles to show the rate of rotation of the engine’s crankshaft and indicate a safe range of rotation speeds.
