How Many Attempts are Allowed for OBC in UPSC?

The number of attempts allowed for OBCs in the UPSC exam is 9 until they reach the age of 35. The number of attempts allowed for Other Backward Classes or OBC aspirants exceeds the General category. Candidates can give only six attempts of the Civil Services Exam in case they belong to the General category. Hence, the OBC category candidates are privileged to relaxed selection criteria compared to the standards of selection adopted for the General Category.

The maximum number of attempts for OBC or any particular candidate differs from each other depending on the category to which they belong.

According to UPSC eligibility, if an OBC candidate wishes to take the exam for the tenth time, the commission will reject their application even if they are within the age limit. They will be incompetent to appear for the exam after their ninth attempt.

OBC Relaxation and Attempt Limit in UPSC

As previously stated, the number of OBC attempts in UPSC is nine. However, aspirants should be aware that OBC is divided into two categories: Creamy Layer and Non-creamy Layer.

  • Those in the other backward categories fall under the creamy layer and are not eligible for the UPSC’s OBC relaxation.
  • The relaxation for attempts will be granted only if the candidate belongs to the OBC Non-Creamy Layer.
  • An aspirant only acquires the community relaxation in a particular caste to which the candidate falls under the reserved categories created by the central Government.
  • Candidates applying for the UPSC CSE must produce the OBC certificate.
