Who is the Present Secretary-General of the United Nations?

António Guterres is the present Secretary-General of the United Nations. He is the ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations, and assumed office on 1 January 2017. The Secretary-General of the United Nations is the chief administrative officer of the United Nations and head of the United Nations Secretariat.

He is a Portuguese politician and diplomat. He served as prime minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002. António Guterres was elected secretary-general in October 2016 and succeeded Ban Ki-moon. 

  • He was born in Parede and raised in Lisbon, Portugal.
  • He started his political career by becoming a member of the Socialist Party in 1974.
  • He graduated in 1965 and won the National Lyceums Award as the best student in the country.
  • Further, he studied physics and electrical engineering and graduated in 1971.
  • After completing his education, he started an academic career as an assistant professor.
