The Faraizi Movement was started by Haji Shariatullah in 1819. The movement urged Bengali Muslims to abandon unIslamic practices and fulfill their religious obligations. The Faraizi movement received a resoundingly positive response in the districts of Dhaka, Faridpur, Barisal, Mymensingh, and Comilla. His movement was the target of a mostly successful slander campaign launched by British and local landowners.

Founder of the Faraizi Movement
Haji Shariatullah founded the Faraizi Movement in 1818. The movement seeks to purify the faith by removing all teachings and practices that contradict Islamic principles. The movement’s primary concern was social inequality, especially when British rule had a significant impact on Muslims’ lives.

Faraizi Movement

Hence, the movement focused on educating people on the moral responsibilities that are ordered by Allah. It gained prominence during the British Raj as leaders like Shariatullah believed that Islam had been degraded under British rule. Hence, he wanted to bring fundamental changes through the campaign.
