The Founder of the Maratha Empire was Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He was a Maratha aristocrat who rose to power after leading the resistance against the Mughal rule of Adil Shah’s dynasty in particular. He established Hindu rule under the Mughals and quickly surpassed them.

Founder of the Maratha Empire
The Maratha Empire was a great empire that bloomed in the 17th century under the dynamic leadership of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The Maratha Confederacy came to dominate much of the Indian subcontinent under his guidance and became one of the most successful dynasties to have existed.
When Shivaji Maharaj was crowned as the Chhatrapati in the year 1674, the Marathas officially came into existence. The English translation of the word ‘Chhatrapati’ is “Keeper of the Umbrella.” The Marathas, a warrior tribe, founded “Hindavi Swarajya” (Hindu self-rule).
