India is the world’s second-largest wheat producer. Wheat is grown in the following states: Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, and Gujarat. Among these states, Uttar Pradesh produces the most wheat. According to the recent 2021-22, India exports wheat varieties to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, United Arab EMTs, Yemen, the Philippines, and Indonesia.

Wheat is the primary cereal crop in India and holds an important place in the Indian agricultural system, and is part of Indian households in a significant way. The Northern part of India contributes majorly to wheat production.
- Cereals play an important role in meeting or satisfying food demands in a significant portion of the world, particularly in India.
- Wheat is a staple in all Indian kitchens; we can’t live without it. Immediately following independence, India was unable to produce wheat and had to import wheat for domestic consumption.
- Only after the ‘Green Revolution’ did India begin to produce wheat on a large scale, meeting all demands. India can currently produce superior varieties of Durum Wheat.
Wheat also plays a significant role in the management of India’s food economy. The main varieties of wheat grown in India are VL-832, VL-804, HS-365,HS-240, HD2687, WH-147, WH-542, PBW-343, WH-896(d), PDW-233(d), UP-2338, PBW-502, Shresth (HD 2687), Aditya (HD 2781), HW-2044, HW-1085, NP-200(di), HW-741.
