Purpose of Local Government in India

The 73rd and 74th constitutional amendments recognize and protect local governments in addition to each state having its own local government laws. While the 73rd amendment to the Constitution established the Panchayati raj system for rural localities, the 74th amendment covers urban localities, which have Nagar Palika but derive their authority from the various state governments. Local bodies and other organizations aid people in exercising their right to self-government.

Municipal bodies and institutions of the Panchayati Raj are chosen directly. In India, local government serves the following purposes:

  • To create and keep up community resources.
  • To manage and control minor irrigation, manage water resources, conserve soil, and enhance land in order to support agricultural development.
  • To advance social forestry, dairy farming, and poultry production.
  • To encourage the growth of the local industry.
  • To oversee and manage local health and education systems.

In a word, local bodies are organizations that enable people to exercise their right to self-government.
