The Problem with the periodization of Indian History that James Mill offers is that he divided the Indian period of history based on the religion of the rulers, i.e., Hindu and Muslim. This was unfair as there were many other religions present at that time. Also, not necessarily all rulers of the time had the same faith, so this classification based on religion was completely wrong. James Mill also believed that all Asian societies were less civilized than Europe.

Problem with Periodization of Indian History by James Mill

James Mill was a political philosopher and economist of Scottish origin. He was known for his heavy three-volume work on the History of British India. According to his comments, India was in dire need of British rule, and only the British could make India a civilized country.

  • He believed that India was a place of darkness, taboos, superstitions, religious intolerance, and ignorance before British rule.
  • He was of the view that the British should control all Indian territories by introducing laws and instituting European etiquette for progress and further civilization.
  • Hence, he was in favor of British rule over India.
