A radical and intellectual trend among Bengali youth emerged in the late 1820s and early 1830s. This movement became known as the “Young Bengal Movement.”

A young Anglo-Indian named Henry Vivian Derozio, who taught at the Hindu College from 1826 to 1831, was the forerunner of this reformist movement.

Derozio’s students, known collectively as “Young Bengal,” insulted all established social mores and customs, denied God’s existence, rejected religious and social convictions, and demanded equal access to education, freedom of speech, and thought for both men and women.
