The Lokpal Bill is a piece of legislation that establishes an anti-corruption body for the Union and the States, the Lokayukta. The Bill was proposed by a team of ministers under the direction of the President. The Standing Committee made significant changes to the Lokpal bill. The amended bill’s name was the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill.

The Citizen’s Ombudsman Bill, also known as the Jan Lokpal Bill, was drafted by Indian civil society activists who wanted to appoint a Jan Lokpal, an independent body to look into corruption cases and wrap up the investigation in a year so that the trial in the case could be concluded in a year.
- Any allegations of corruption against the Prime Minister, a Minister in the Union government, a Member of Parliament, and employees of the Union government in Groups A, B, C, and D may be investigated by the Lokpal.
- Additionally covered are the chairs, members, officers, and directors of any board, corporation, society, trust, or autonomous body created by a law of the legislature or receiving full or partial funding from the federal, state, or local governments.
- Additionally, it includes any society, trust, or other organisation that receives foreign contributions of over 10 lakhs.
Importance of Lokpal Bill
The importance of the Lokpal bill has been elaborated on below:
- Its aim is to set up an anti-corruption institution called Lokpal at the National level, supported by Lokayukta at the state level.
- The inquiry has to be completed within sixty days and the investigation has to be completed within six months.
- Lokpal is vested with the powers of a civil court.
- He can recommend the transfer or suspension of the public servant.
- He can superintendent and give direction to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
