An Arid Landform is an area having a severe shortage of available water, to the extent that it inhibits the growth and development of plant and animal life. Landforms in the arid region are mostly created by winds and also developed by water. In arid areas, winds play a major role in forming landforms. Water can also create some types of landforms. Badlands, Mushroom rocks, dunes, yardang, etc. are features of arid landforms. These characteristics are typical of an arid area.

Classification of Arid Landforms
There are three processes involved in the creation of arid landforms by air. They are Deflation – remove, lift, and transport sands and dust particles away by winds, which causes depression, known as blowouts. Abrasion – Process of wearing away the wall of rocks by the sand and dust-loaded winds. Attrition – Process of erosion that occurs during rock collision and transportation. The various types of Arid landforms have been given below.
- Water eroded Arid Landforms: Gully, Rill, Badland Topography, Ravine, Bolsons, Pediments, Playas, Bajada, etc.
- Wind Eroded Arid Landforms: Mushroom rocks, Deflation basins, Inselbergs, Demoiselles, Zeugen, Demoiselles, Wind bridges, and windows.
- Depositional Arid Landforms: Ripple Marks, Longitudinal dunes, Transverse dunes, Parabolic dunes, Barchans, Star dunes, and Loess.
- Dry areas are characterized by minimal rainfall.
The great challenges of living in arid regions worldwide are the scarcity of water, limited resources, and the persistent uncertainty of the desert climate.
