At Fort Gloster, close to Kolkata, India’s first cotton fabric factory was established in 1818 but failed. The second factory, built by KGN Daber in 1854, is the birthplace of India’s modern cotton industry. Bombay Spinning & Weaving Company was its name.
Bombay Cotton Mill emerged as a major port when shipping crude cotton from India to England and China. Ranchers started investing resources in this cotton crop since it attracted much attention. Market prices for cotton fluctuated. Many new workers started out in the plant industry.
