Name of the super cyclone ‘Yaas’ was given by Oman. The Persian term Yaas, translated into English is called “Jasmine.” Around May 22, 2021, a low-pressure area developed over the North Andaman Sea, bordered the east-central Bay of Bengal, and eventually strengthened into Cyclone Yaas, a powerful cyclone. Tropical cyclones typically form during the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons in the North Indian Ocean, which includes the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.

Name of the Super Cyclone Yaas

Oman gave the cyclone Yaas its name. The word Yaas translated in English as Jasmine has come from Persian. Last year, India was hit by two cyclones. Cyclone Yaas made landfall in India, it battered coastal areas with heavy wind and rain, causing damage to homes and delivering waves that flooded towns. As the hurricane neared, more than a million people were evacuated nationwide. When Cyclone Yaas hit India, the country was already stressed out from fighting a fatal second wave of Covid-19 infections.

Classification of Cyclone Yaas:

Cyclone Yaas was categorized as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS). The highest sustained surface wind speed (MSW) that a cyclone may produce determines its classification by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The cyclones are divided into four categories: severe (MSW 48 to 63 knots), very severe (64 to 89 knots), extremely severe (90 to 119 knots), and super cyclonic storms (MSW 120 knots or above).
