By BYJU'S Exam Prep

Updated on: November 9th, 2023

The Effects of Cyclones include loss of human life, animal and marine life damage, a negative impact on the tourism industry, economic losses, and an overall impact on people’s social well-being. Cyclone refers to weather conditions in which a chain of events culminates in forming a very low-pressure system with extremely high-speed winds revolving around it.

Effects of Cyclones

Cyclone effects vary according to the type of cyclone. The force of the wind in some cyclones destroys the entire environment. The devastation continues after the cyclone passes. Fallen trees clog roads, causing transportation issues and delaying medical supplies for the injured. It also has an impact on electrical and telephone lines. As a result, major services are disrupted.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the cyclones move from east to west in the anti-clockwise direction and in the clockwise direction in the Southern Hemisphere.

Formation of Cyclones

The conditions for the formation of cyclones are given below:

  • Coriolis force or Coriolis effect.
  • The temperature of the large sea surface is higher than 27° C.
  • Differences in the vertical wind speed are small.
  • Pre-existing low-level-cyclonic circulation or weak low-pressure area.

However, science has advanced to the point where we can now predict cyclones months in advance. This is a significant achievement in terms of disaster management, and it allows the people living in such cyclone-prone areas to plan ahead and minimize the damage to their property and lives.
