They demanded the creation of a nation-state on parliamentary principles like a constitution, freedom of the press, and freedom of association. The hungry and jobless peasants, workers, and educated middle class launched the 1848 revolution to achieve their demands for constitutionalism and national unification.

1848 Revolution – Political, Social and Economic Ideas

Political organisations from the German regions, whose members were middle-class professionals, businessmen, and prosperous artisans, gathered in Frankfurt. They opted for an all-German National Assembly. The issue of granting women political rights was divisive within the liberal movement.

  • They did not want a class-biased environment in the social context. Women founded newspapers, political organisations, and so on. They actively participated in political rallies and fought for the right to vote.
  • Economically, liberals demanded market freedom and property rights. They demanded that the government lift restrictions on the flow of capital and goods. Conservative forces suppressed liberal activity in 1848.
