Buddha attained nirvana at Kushinagar in the Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh. He was born in Lumbini in 563 BC in the house of King Suddhodana of the Kshatriya Shakya clan of the Ikshvaku dynasty. Her mother’s name was Mahamaya who was of the Koliya dynasty. She died seven days after his birth and then he was raised by Mahaprajapati Gautami, the younger real sister of the queen.

The first person to achieve this state of enlightenment was Siddhartha Gautama, who is still referred to as the Buddha. Buddhists don’t believe in any sort of deity or god, but they do believe in supernatural beings who can aid or obstruct a person’s journey toward enlightenment. At the age of 29, Siddhartha separated from his wife Yashodhara, and their only child Rahul.

Buddha or Siddhartha Gautama also left the love of royalty and headed to the forest in search of a means to free the world from ageing, death, sorrow, and true divine knowledge. He became Lord Buddha from Siddhartha Gautama when, after many years of diligent practice, he attained enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya (Bihar).

Lord Buddha suggested the eightfold path for suffering, its causes, and redress. He laid great emphasis on non-violence. He condemned Yagya and animal sacrifice. The essence of Buddha’s teachings is as follows:

  • He propagated some concepts of Sanatan Dharam, such as Agnihotra and Gayatri Mantra.
  • Four noble truths
  • Ashtanga Path
  • Focus and insight, etc.
