By BYJU'S Exam Prep
Updated on: September 25th, 2023
Light is a type of electromagnetic radiation that makes things visible or enables the human eye to see. It can also be defined as radiation that is visible to the human eye. Light contains photons, which are minuscule energy packets. It is a type of energy that, when reflected from objects nearby, allows us to see our surroundings. Light moves in a straight line from one place to another.

Light Definition and Examples
Light originates from a source, reflects off things that our eyes perceive, and is then processed by the brain to give us the ability to see. According to Maxwell, magnetic and electric fields move as waves that are traveling at the speed of light.
On Earth, the Sun is the primary source of natural light. Fire has historically played a significant role in human lighting, from primitive campfires to contemporary kerosene lamps. Electric lighting has effectively replaced firelight as a result of advancements in electric lights and power systems.
Properties of Light
Direction of propagation, Intensity, frequency and polarization make up the fundamental characteristics of light. One of the basic constants of nature is its speed in a vacuum, 299792458 m/s. Some of the properties of light are:
- Refraction
- Reflection
- Dispersion
- Interference
- Polarization
What is the Definition of Light?
Light is an electromagnetic radiation produced by hot objects such as lasers, lightbulbs, and the sun. It is a type of kinetic energy that makes the situation visible to the human eye or makes it possible for it to be seen.
