Prime Numbers 1 to 100: There are different types of numbers in mathematics. Prime numbers are that category of numbers that have only two factors – 1 and the number itself. For example, 8 has factors like 2,4,8,1. On the other hand, 5 has only two factors like 1 and 5 itself. Hence, 5 is a prime number whereas 8 is a composite number. Also, note that 1 is neither a prime number nor a composite number.

Prime numbers can also be defined as the numbers that are not a product of any other two positive integers. 

What is the Prime Number?

A prime number is a number that either appears in its table or the table of 1. There is no other set of numbers that give a product of a prime number. The prime numbers have only two factors. 

The first ten prime numbers are: 2,3,5,7,11,13,17,19,23,29

Properties of Prime Numbers

  • Every number which is greater than 1 will be divided by at least 1 prime number
  • To prime numbers will always be coprime to each other
  • Every even positive integer greater than 2 can be written as the sum of two prime numbers.
  • Other than 2, all other prime numbers are odd.

What are Coprime numbers?

Two numbers that have the highest common factor (HCF) as 1 are coprime to each other.

For example:

Factors of 15= 1,3,5,15

Factors of 8= 1,2,4,8

The only common factor between 15 and 8 is 1. So, they are coprime to each other

Note that 15 and 8 are not prime numbers themselves, they are composite numbers but are coprime to each other.

How to find the Prime Numbers?

Method 1

To find a prime number you can use the following formula to find the prime number: 6n+1 or 6n-1. Since only 2 and 3 are the prime numbers which are consecutive in nature, other prime numbers can be found using this formula except for the multiples of prime numbers. For example:

6(1) – 1 = 5

6(1) + 1 = 7

6(2) – 1 = 11

6(2) + 1 = 13

6(3) – 1 = 17

6(3) + 1 = 19

6(4) – 1 = 23

6(4) + 1 = 25 (multiple of 5)

Method 2

To figure out prime numbers which are greater than 40, you can use the formula:

n2 + n + 41, where n = 0, 1, 2, … 39

For example:

(0)2 + 0 + 0 = 41

(1)2 + 1 + 41 = 43

(2)2 + 2 + 41 = 47

Smallest Prime Number

The smallest prime number is 2. For a number to be prime, it has to have only two factors i.e. 1 and the number itself. 2 is identified to be the smallest such number. 

Largest Prime Number

The Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) has found that the largest prime number as of now is  2^(82,589,933) – 1 a number which has 24,862,048 digits.
