The process of formation of red oxide or iron oxide on the surface of iron and alloys, when exposed to air and moisture, is called rusting.

The process where a substance reacts with oxygen by releasing heat and light

Factors Affecting Rusting

Many factors increase rusting, like the environment's pH and moisture content. Some of the factors are given here.

  • Moisture - The process of corrosion is restricted to the presence of water. Exposure to rain is the main purpose for rusting.
  • Acid - When the environment pH surrounding the metal is less, the rusting process is fastened. Rusting increases when exposed to acid rain. The Higher the pH, the higher the iron corrosion.
  • Salt - The iron rusts fast in the sea because of the availability of salts. Saltwater has many ions which fasten the process of rusting through electrochemical reactions.
  • Impurity - Pure form of iron rust slowly compared to iron having a mixture of metals.

The object size of iron can affect the process of rusting. For instance, an iron object has small deficiencies because of smelting.
