Difference Between Precis & Summary: Know the Complete Details

Difference Between Precis & Summary: We must extract the primary idea from a piece of information in various places of the play, and this is exactly what Precis refers to. In contrast, in a summary, the reader or listener determines the important information that must be communicated. So, let's get a quick overview of what Precis or Summary is.

The major differentiator between a summary and a precis is that a precis has a heading and a title, whereas a summary does not. Precis and Summary are two sorts of writing styles that are used to condense and shorten a long chapter.

When writing a precis, it's important to keep the original passage's language and structure, especially the keywords. We'll look at the difference and similarities between Precis and Summary, as well as their characteristics, in this post.

What is precis?

Precision can be defined as a small miniature of any piece of writing that delivers the absolute major point of that writing or article. It must have an appropriate heading and must follow the same arrangement as the original work.

Precis is a short piece of writing that concentrates on the most relevant facts and covers all of the passage's major points. Using the overall structure of the original source, refers to extracting the major concepts and providing the absolutely necessary information.

The most important points are usually summarized here. Throughout the read, the tone of the speech remains consistent. In summary, a conclusion is required at the end of the paper to validate the other important points discussed.

What is a summary?

A summary is a condensed version of all the information found in a given article. A summary is depicted by any passage or article with a shortened variation, where the headline is not as crucial. It is not only necessary to keep the headline, but also the order, in order to cover all of the crucial information.

The tone of the summary varies, and it is not required to be in chronological sequence. The summary can potentially exclude the conclusion and still convey the same message.

A summary is a simplified version of a passage or piece of writing. It's a one-paragraph summary written in your own words that highlight the passage's main ideas.

The goal of a summary is to provide a condensed version of the text while still expressing the author's primary points. It is important to note that one's personal interpretations should not be included.

How to Differentiate Precis & Summary:

A summary is a brief overview of all the key points in an article that can be written in one or two paragraphs, depending on the length of the original material. It does not require a title or a conclusion, unlike a precis.

This is, in reality, the primary distinction between a summary and a precis. A summary can be written in one's own words, and it does not need to be in the same order as the original. A precis is not the same as an outline.

It should have a title and a conclusion, and it should accurately communicate the original article's meaning, tone, and order.

Precis-

  1. It's merely a concise version of the article.
  2. It's a piece of text that includes the original passage's structure and keywords.
  3. It's important that the order and structure are preserved.
  4. It contains the most important or crucial information.
  5. The speech's tone should be consistent throughout.
  6. It is necessary to extract the key notion and a final paragraph should be included.

Summary-

  1. It is not necessary to use a heading.
  2. It's a condensed version of the article's description.
  3. There's no need to keep things in order.
  4. It uses the reader's own words to convey itself.
  5. The concept has already been extracted in its simplest form.
  6. It is not always necessary to end with a conclusion.

What is common between Precis & Summary?

Both the precis and the summary provide a condensed version of the original material. Even if the headings and conclusions are missing, the point remains the same. There is no concept addition. The facts haven't changed in a long time.

The article contains no factual concepts. We can observe that one-third of both the original texts, in precis and summary, keep the order and complete the meaning of the phrases if we look at them in a systematic fashion.
