Present Advocate General of Tamil Nadu

The Advocate General of State is India’s highest legal representative. In the Order of Precedence, the Additional Solicitor General comes before the Advocate General of the State. The Advocate General of State position is only open to Indian citizens; foreigners are not allowed to hold this public position.

He is absolutely entitled to appear in any state court.
He is not allowed to vote during committee meetings or house sessions of the state legislature.
He has the right to speak and participate in these events, though.
The Governor appoints the state’s advocate general on the advice of the council of ministers.

Eligibility for Advocate General

The following requirements must be satisfied for someone to be eligible to hold the position of advocate general in India:

He must be a citizen of India.
He must be qualified to serve as a judge of the High Court, which means he must satisfy one of the following requirements:
- A barrister with more than five years’ worth of experience.
- A public employee with more than ten years of experience has worked for at least three years as a servant in the Zila Court.
- A pleader over 10 years in any high court
He shouldn’t be older than 62, as that is the maximum allowed.
