Vasco da Gama discovered the Sea Route to India. He was a Portuguese explorer who ended up discovering the maritime route to India. This was the first documented expedition from Europe to India and was done under the rule of King Manuel I. Through this expedition, the Portuguese established a foothold in Kerala and the Indian Ocean, and it was regarded as one of the most notable nautical journeys.

After sailing through the western coast of Africa, Vasco Da Gama made numerous stops before reaching the trading post of Calicut, India, in 1498. His fleet of ships reached a place called Kappadu on the Malabar coast which is present-day Kerala.
The third of the couple’s five sons, Estevao da Gama and Isabel Sodre, Vasco de Gama, was born in the town of Sines in 1460 or 1469. On his first voyage to India, he used the summer monsoon wind to sail and completed the journey across the Indian Ocean in just 23 days with a fleet of 170 people.
However, on his return voyage, he used the opposite strategy, sailing against the wind and ignoring wing patterns, taking 132 days to complete the same route with only 54 people remaining after many of his crew members actually died during this lengthy voyage.
