The third of the couple’s five sons, Estevao da Gama and Isabel Sodre, Vasco de Gama, was born in the town of Sines in 1460 or 1469. On his first voyage to India, he used the summer monsoon wind to sail and completed the journey across the Indian Ocean in just 23 days with a fleet of 170 people.

However, on his return voyage, he used the opposite strategy, sailing against the wind and ignoring wing patterns, taking 132 days to complete the same route with only 54 people remaining after many of his crew members actually died during this lengthy voyage.
