Orissa is the largest bauxite-producing state in the country. Odisha accounts for about 50% of bauxite production in India. It has reserves of about 325,269 thousand tonnes of bauxite. The major bauxite belt of Odisha is located in Kalahandi and Koraput districts. The width of the belt is 40-100 km, and the length is 300 km. Odisha’s main bauxite deposits are in Koraput, Kalahandi, Sundergarh, Bolangir, and Sambalpur districts.

Largest Producer of Bauxite in India

India has abundant resources of bauxite. India has about 830,000 thousand tonnes of reserves. Bauxite production in India is the largest in the world. India ranks 7th in terms of bauxite reserves. Bauxite is one of the main ores of aluminium. Aluminum is one of the important non-ferrous metals used in modern industry.

Bauxite is present in the form of aluminium rock. It contains hydrated aluminium oxide as the main component. Other Indian states such as Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and Jharkhand contribute to India’s bauxite production. Among these, the main mining areas in Odisha are Kathkal, Baplimoli Hills, Pottangi, Manjimali, Passenmali, Chandragiri, Kunnumali, Kodingandi and Karalaput in Kalahandi and Koraput districts.

The world has an estimated 28 billion tonnes of bauxite reserves. Australia is the major producer of bauxite in the world.

  • Gujarat (8%),
  • Jharkhand (5%),
  • Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh (4% each)
