Where do the Rivers Indus and Ganga have their Origin?

The origin of the Indus and Ganges rivers is in the Himalayas. While the Indus and the Ganges are cross-border rivers, the Indus is also a trans-Himalayan river of South and Central Asia. Indus river originates from Tibet near Lake Mansarovar. Whereas the Ganges River originates from the Gangotri Glacier. The Indus River springs in Tibet, close to Lake Mansarovar. Lastly, China, India, and Pakistan are all bordered by the Indus River, and the Ganges river traverses Bangladesh and India.

Origin of River Indus and Ganga

The rivers Indus and Ganga share a common originating point – the Himalayas. Indus river begins at the confluence of the Sengge Zangbo and Gar Tsangpo rivers, then flows northwest through Ladakh (Indian-administered Kashmir) and parts of Pakistan-administered Kashmir. It then descends into the Punjab plains of Pakistan.

On the other hand, the river Ganga flows south and east through the Gangetic plain of North India. The Ganga begins in the town of Devprayag, at the confluence of the Alaknanda.

  • Hinduism considers the Ganges to be its holiest river. River Ganges is worshipped as Goddess Ganga.
  • The Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers join together at Devprayag in the state of Uttarakhand to form the Ganges. The Bhagirathi originates from the Gangotri glacier at Gomukh.
  • The Ganges river joins the Bay of Bengal.
  • The Ganges river joins the Yamuna river near Allahabad.
  • The Ganges also crosses several historically important places, including Kashi, Kannauj, Pataliputra, Patna, and Kolkata. The river Ganges is seriously polluted due to industrial waste, sewage, and other things. The Government of India is working to clean the river Ganga.
