The Aim of the Servants of India Society was to train the national missionaries to serve India and promote the fundamental interests of the Indian people only through constitutional means. A small group of educated Indians accompanied them, such as Natesh Appaji Dravid, Gopal Krishna Deodhar, Surendra Nath Banerjee, and Anant Patwardhan. They wanted to promote social and human development and overthrow British rule in India.

Aim of the Servants of India Society

Gopal Krishna Gokhale left the Deccan Education Society to form the Servants of India association. It was the first secular organization in this country dedicated to underprivileged, rural, and tribal people, emergency relief, literacy, and other social causes.

The society created numerous campaigns to support education, hygiene, and health care, protect women from domestic abuse and combat social evils, including untouchability, discrimination, alcoholism, poverty, and the subjugation of women.

In Nagpur, India, Hitavada, the Society’s English-language publication, first appeared in 1911. The first secular group in the country focused on social issues and underprivileged rural and tribal populations.

  • After completing five years of training, members consent to serve for a very modest salary.
  • Gokhale took over as president in 1915, succeeding Srinivasa Sastri (1869-1946).
