The Full Form of SP, SI, ASI, DSP, and DC is Superintendent of Police, Sub Inspector, Assistant Sub-Inspector, Deputy Superintendent of Police, and Deputy Commissioner, respectively. All these are prestigious ranks in the Indian Police system. In most states, there are two types of police – armed and civil. For maintaining daily law and order and reducing crime, the civil police are in charge. Armed police are held in reserve until additional assistance is needed in circumstances like riots.

Full Form of SP, SI, ASI, DSP, DC

If we order these ranks by seniority, first is the Deputy Commissioner (DC), followed by the Superintendent of Police (SP), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Sub Inspector (SI), and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI).

The posts of DC, SP, and DSP have gazetted officers’ ranks in the Indian Police Service. Whereas SI and ASI are the Indian Police non-gazetted officers’ ranks. The Indian Police Service is under the direction of the Ministry of Home Affairs, which is in charge of overall internal and external security and policing.

SI Full Form

The Full Form of SI is Sub Inspector. A SI typically oversees several police officers (with head constables, constables, etc.). According to Indian Police regulations, SI is typically the one who initiates an investigation. They are subordinated by officers who can only conduct investigations on their behalf and cannot file charges. In some states, like Kerala, they might serve as station officers.

ASI Full Form

The Full Form of ASI is Assistant Sub Inspector. An ASI is a non-gazetted police officer who ranks below a Sub-inspector and above a police head constable. The officer is in charge of police outposts and investigation centers. For senior officers, ASI reports incidents.

DSP Full Form

The Full Form of DSP is Deputy Superintendent of Police. DSP is also known as the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP). They are members of the provincial forces who have a set number of years of service—between 8 and 15 years, depending on the state—before they can be promoted to the Indian Police Service.

SP Full Form

The Full Form of SP is Superintendent of Police. SP is a senior rank in the Indian Police Service (IPS). Their epaulets display a star, the Ashoka logo, and the letters IPS. Additional Superintendents of Police are below SP (Additional SP).

DC Full Form

The Full Form of DC is Deputy Commissioner. Senior Superintendent of Police is another title for Deputy Commissioner. A Senior Superintendent of Police oversees India’s larger and more significant districts (SSP). IPS officers hold the rank of SP for the first 13 years before becoming eligible for promotion to SSP.
