To understand the vegetation in Ladakh, it is important to understand the climate of the place and other geographical conditions:
- The altitude in Ladakh ranges from around 3,000 meters in Kargil to more than 8,000 meters in the Karakoram.
- Because of its high altitude, the area has a very cold and dry climate. Because of the thinness of the air at this altitude, the sun’s heat is intense. Daytime temperatures in the summer are above zero.
- The overnight lows remain well below 30 degrees Celsius. Winters are bitterly cold.
- Due to its location in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, it receives little precipitation, as little as 10 cm per year.
- The area is being battered by both cold winds and a scorching sun.
Ladakh’s chilly desert has little vegetation because of its great aridity. There are few plants and grassy places for animals to feed on. In the lowlands, Willow and Poplar groves can be seen. Fruit trees like apple, apricot, and walnut trees bloom in the summer.
