Nana Saheb led the Revolt of 1857 in Kanpur with his administrator Tantia Tope and secretary Azimullah Khan. Nana Saheb was the adopted child of Peshwa Baji Rao II. The revolt of 1857 was spread across Meerut, Agra, Mathura, Lucknow, and nearby areas of Kanpur. Sepoys in the Bengal Presidency started it against the British authorities.

The 1857 Revolt marked the beginning of the struggle for freedom from British colonial tyranny. The 1857 revolt went under many names, including the Sepoy Mutiny and India’s First War of Independence. As a sepoy mutiny, the uprising started in Meerut on May 10, 1857.
The British East India Company’s era of power ended with this Independence War. Following this, the British government administered India directly through the governor’s general. The 1857 rebellion was preceded by many disturbing effects in various parts of the country since the late 18th century.
