EWS Rank is a sub-category for candidates taking various competitive tests. The term EWS refers to the Economically Weaker Section. EWS rank is only available to EWS students/applicants. Depending on their rank, EWS candidates are guaranteed a seat in the selection process. EWS candidates are allocated 10% of all available seats.

Meaning of EWS Rank

The EWS rank is for applicants from the Economically Weaker Sections, which includes candidates from the General category. The allocation of 10% seats in the EWS category is not advantageous to many because there are a large number of applicants in any competitive examination.

  • The fundamental requirement for obtaining EWS classification is that a person’s family income be less than Rs. 8 lakhs per year.
  • It is also subject to other conditions.
  • When taking a competitive examination, like JEE, the EWS rank comes into play.
  • As previously stated, it is only examined among EWS candidates and is distinct from the standard overall rank.
  • For example, if you are competing with 1000 candidates in all and the EWS candidates are 100 in number, and you attain a better rank than 500 candidates overall and 50 candidates among the EWS ones, then your general rank will be 499, and your EWS rank will be 49.
