Swami Vivekananda died due to the rupture of a blood vessel in his brain. He died on 4 July 1902 at 9:20 pm while meditating. He died at Belur Math, located in West Bengal. Belur Math is the headquarters of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission. His last rites were performed on a sandalwood pyre on the banks of the river Ganges. The death anniversary of Swami Vivekananda is celebrated every year on 4th July.

According to his disciples, the probable cause of death was a rupture of a blood vessel in his brain. He battled various health problems during the course of his life, including kidney disease, malaria, diabetes, migraine, insomnia and heart problems. Swami Vivekananda was a writer, philosopher, and Indian Hindu monk. Narendranath Dutt was his original name.
