Endemic species of a zone, a state, or a country refer to those types of plants and animals that can only be found in that region. For instance, the endemic sal and wild mango flora of the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve. You must be aware that some animals can only be found in certain geographical areas and nowhere else. They are known as endemic species.

Meaning and Examples of Endemic Species in India

Can you name any two endemic species that you know of now that you have a basic understanding of them? Please keep in mind that these geographical areas can be small or large. The species, for instance, can be discovered on a continent or even an island. The terms “paleoendemism” and “neoendemism” refer to two different types of endemism.

  • A species that once lived in a large area but now only inhabits a smaller one is said to be paleoendemismic.
  • There are over 2,500 species that are considered endemic, which means the species are restricted to an area of fewer than 5 million hectares.
  • Birds are less likely to be endemic to a region because of their ability to fly, but they are still less likely to be.
