There is No Atmosphere on the Moon Because ______

By BYJU'S Exam Prep

Updated on: November 9th, 2023

There is no atmosphere on the moon because the gravitational field on the moon is too weak to retain any atmosphere. It has no water and no magnetic field. Earth has only one moon. The reason for there not being an atmosphere on the moon is that the gases on it have little gravitational force. In addition to that, it also does not have a big escape velocity which results in there is no atmosphere on the moon.

Lack of Atmosphere on the Moon

The moon along with the stars, planets, and other objects in the sky are called celestial objects. It is the brightest object in the night sky. The day when the whole disc of the moon is visible is known as the full moon day. On the fifteenth day, the moon is not visible. This day is known as the ‘new moon day’. The small portion of the moon that appears in the sky on the next day is known as the crescent moon.

Surface of the Moon:

Following are the details concerned with the moon’s surface:

  • The surface of the moon is dusty and barren.
  • It also has a large number of steep and high mountains.
  • There are many craters of different sizes.
  • Neil Armstrong, the American astronaut, landed on the moon for the first time.

Summary:

There is No Atmosphere on the Moon Because ______

Due to the weak gravitational field on the moon, there is no atmosphere on it. The gravitational force of the gases on the moon is small which results in there being no retention of atmosphere on its surface. The escape velocity of the moon is also not large enough to help the moon have an atmosphere.
