The Output of a Sequential Circuit Depends upon

A sequential circuit’s output is influenced by its past outputs and current combination of inputs. Sequential circuits combine memory components with combinational circuits, in contrast to combinational circuits. Counters and shift registers are a couple of such examples. A unique class of circuits is referred to as a sequential circuit. The combinational circuit and its memory storage components make up the sequential circuit.

Output of a Sequential Circuit

While the output of a combinational circuit depends only on the current inputs, that of a sequential circuit depends on both the current and previous inputs. The current input and the previous output values affect the circuit’s output. It has a memory component and an input-to-output feedback path. Compared to combinational circuits, it has a more complicated circuit. Flip flops, counters, and shift registers are a few examples.

A sequential circuit is one of a certain type of circuit. It features a variety of inputs and outputs. The outputs, in this case, are decided by combining the previous and current outputs. This earlier output is handled in light of the current circumstance. The sequential circuit is thus composed of the combinational circuit and its memory storage elements.

There are mainly two types of sequential circuits. These are asynchronous and synchronous sequential circuits. Both types are explained below:

  • Asynchronous Sequential Circuits: The clock signals are not used by the asynchronous sequential circuits. Different pulses are used to operate this kind of circuit. As a result, our input modifications can easily alter our circuit’s state. For asynchronous circuits, clock pulses are not used. Every time the input variable changes, in this case, the internal state also changes. In asynchronous sequential circuits, the memory components are time-delayed or unlocked flip-flops. This kind of circuit shares many similarities with combinational circuits and feedback circuits.
  • Synchronous Sequential Circuits: In synchronous sequential circuits, the clock signal synchronizes the state of the memory components. In this instance, either latch (memory devices) or flip-flops are used to store the output. Only positive or only negative edges of the clock are used to synchronize the output.
