Ladakh is the cold desert of India. It is located at the height of 3000 meters in Kargil to over 8000 meters in Karakoram. Due to the high altitude, the air is so thin, and one can feel the wind and heat of the sun simultaneously. Ladakh lies in the Great Himalayas on the eastern side area of Jammu and Kashmir. It is commonly called Khapa-chan, which means snow land.

Cold Desert of India

Deserts are arid habitats that get less precipitation than 25 centimetres (10 inches) a year. From Ladakh in the state of Jammu and Kashmir in the north to Kinnaur in the state of Himachal Pradesh in the south, the Cold Desert Cultural Landscape of India is located in the Himalayas. Due to two characteristics, the area is part of the Cold Desert habitat and experiences severe weather conditions.

One is that it is in a rain-shadow zone because of its location on the leeward side of the Himalayas and is therefore cut off from the rest of the country’s annual southeastern monsoon winds, which create drought with such little precipitation.

  • Ladakh is encompassed by the Karakoram Range in the north and the Zanskar Mountains in the south.
  • The major reason why Ladakh is the coldest desert is that it is situated at a high altitude and the air which blows here is so thin that a person can feel the sun’s heat.
  • Especially in the summer season, the temperature rises above zero degrees, and at night, it falls 30 degrees. Whereas in the winter season, the weather temperature is around 40 degrees.
  • Ladakh receives the lowest rainfall due to the great Himalayan effect.
