How many Members are there in the National Human Rights Commission?

Members of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) are a chairman, five full-time members, and four national members. So, there are a total of nine members in the NHRC. The National Human Rights Commission is a multi-member body. The statutes establish the conditions for the appointment of the chairman and members of the commission. The Protection of Human Rights Act of 1993 (PHRA) provided it with a legal foundation.

How many Members are in NHRC?

The National Human Rights Commission is in charge of upholding human rights, which are defined by law as “Rights relating to liberty, life, dignity, and equality of the individual protected by the Constitution or enshrined in international agreements and enforceable by courts in India” (NHRC).

The Indian National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) was established as a statutory public entity on October 12, 1993, as a result of the Protection of Human Rights Ordinance of September 28, 1993. Its legal basis was the Protection of Human Rights Act of 1993 (PHRA).

President and members of NHRC

The NHRC consists of a Chairman and five members (excluding ex-officio members, a Chief Justice who has been the Chief Justice of India, or a Judge of the Supreme Court.

  • One member is or was a Judge of the Supreme Court of India, and one member is or was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
  • Three members, at least one of whom must be a woman, shall be appointed from among persons who have knowledge or practical experience in matters related to human rights.
  • Additionally, the High Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities and the presidents of the following national commissions serve as ex-official members: National Commission for Scheduled Castes, National Commission for Scheduled Tribes, National Commission for Women, National Commission for Minorities, National Commission for Backward Classes, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights.

A sitting judge of the Supreme Court or the presiding judge of the Supreme Court can be appointed only after consultation with the Chief Justice of India.
