Does PSLV have a Cryogenic Engine?

There is no cryogenic engine in the PSLV. To place heavier satellites in higher orbits, the GSLV has a cryogenic engine. The Indian Space Research Organization designed and operates the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), an expendable medium-lift launch vehicle (ISRO).

Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) Engine

The second stage of PSLV is powered by the Vikas engine, a liquid rocket engine that can be stored on Earth and was created by the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre. It was created to allow India to launch its Indian Earth Remote Reconnaissance Satellites (IRS) into sun-synchronous orbits.

  • This service was commercially available only from Russia until the arrival of the PSLV in 1993.
  • PSLV can also launch small satellites into a geostationary transfer orbit.
  • Through numerous launch campaigns of multiple satellites with auxiliary payloads, typically ride-hailing along with the primary payload in India, PSLV has established itself as a market leader in ride-hailing services for small satellites.
  • The most notable of these was that of PSLV-C37 on February 15, 2017, which successfully launched 104 satellites into sun-synchronous orbit, breaking Russia’s previous record for the most satellites launched in a single launch.
  • SpaceX launched the Transporter-1 mission on a Falcon 9 rocket carrying 143 satellites into orbit until January 24, 2021.
  • Chandrayaan-1, India’s first lunar probe, Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan), and Astrosat, India’s first space observatory were among the notable payloads launched by PSLV.

Does PSLV have a Cryogenic Engine?

The PSLV lacks a cryogenic engine; on the other hand, the GSLV includes a cryogenic engine for placing heavier satellites in higher orbits. As of June 2022, PSLV has launched 345 foreign satellites from 36 countries.
