The UPSC CSE Preliminary Examination 2020 seeks application for the Civil Services and the Indian Forest Service Examinations. Please remember that the eligibility criteria and other selection norms apply to the same. Also, be vigilant that there will be a ceiling on the number of candidates allotted to each of the centers, except Chennai, Dispur, Kolkata and Nagpur. The allotment of the centers will be on the 'first-apply-first-allot' basis.

Mode of Payment: Both online, by using Visa/Master/RuPay Credit/Debit Card or by using Internet Banking of SBI and offline by remitting the money in any Branch of State Bank of India.
Note: "Pay by Cash” mode will be deactivated at 11.59 P.M. of 02.03.2020, i.e. one day before the closing date. However, applicants who have generated their Pay-in- Slip before it is deactivated may pay at the counter of SBI Branch during banking hours on the closing date.
Withdrawal of Application: Incase, anyone is having second thoughts about appearing the examination this year and seeking for the cancellation of the application for the year 2020, then he/she can be withdrawn from 12.03.2020 to 18.03.2020 till 6.00 PM after which the link will be disabled.

The number of vacancies to be filled approximately is 796 on the result of the examination, including the bifurcation of allotment as follows:
- 24 vacancies reserved for Persons with Benchmark Disability Category i.e.
- 3 vacancies for the blindness and low vision
- 9 vacancies for the deaf and hard of hearing
- 8 vacancies for the locomotor r disability including cerebral palsy, leprosy cured, dwarfism, acid attack victims and muscular dystrophy etc
- 4 vacancies for multiple disabilities
Note: The final number of vacancies may undergo change after getting a firm number of vacancies from Cadre Controlling Authorities.
Vacancies under the Reservation:

UPSC Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible to apply for the UPSC CSE 2020, make sure you fulfill the following criteria as described below:
1. Nationality:
(a) A candidate must be a citizen of India for becoming the Indian Administrative Service, the Indian Foreign Service, and the Indian Police Service, a candidate.
(b) And for other services, a candidate must either be:
- a citizen of India or
- a subject of Nepal, or
- a subject of Bhutan, or
- a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 1st January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
- a person of Indian origin (PIO) who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India
Note: For the PIOs, a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India is a mandatory requisite.
- Age: The minimum age is 21 years, and the maximum age is 32 years as on the 1st August 2020.
Note: He/she must have been born not earlier than 2nd August 1988 and not later than 1st August 1999.

3. Educational Qualification:
The candidate must possess a degree from the recognized University or educational institution established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University Under Section-3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification

UPSC CSE Selection Procedure 2020
To qualify and become a Civil Servant in through UPSC, you need to appear and crack all the three stages as mentioned below:
- Preliminary Examination: Qualifying in nature
- Main Examination: The marks obtained in this phase are considered for the final selection. These marks decide the rank and hence, the posts allotted to a candidate.
- Interview: The purpose of the interview is to assess the true and authentic self of an individual. It is to check whether the candidate is suitable for a career in the civil services and serve the society with zeal. Overall, it is not a knowledge test but a personality test. The interview panel just observes how a candidate responds to a given question, the approach is important.
- Number of Attempts: The Union Public Service Commission allows the number of attempts as per the category he/she belongs:

Note: A candidate who is appointed to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) or the Indian Foreign Service(IFS) on the results of an earlier examination and continues to be a member of that service will not be eligible to compete at this examination.
UPSC CSE Exam Pattern 2020
The Civil Services Examination (CSE) is carried out in successive stages:
- CSE Preliminary Examination
This examination is Objective type and is conducted for the selection of candidates for the Main Examination. The marks obtained in this examination is not counted for the final merit list.
- CSE Main Examination (Written and Interview)
This examination is a rigorous activity involving not only the metal alertness but also the representation both on paper and in conduct. The marks obtained in this examination are counted for the final merit. The rank obtained in the merit list is decisive for the allotment of various Services and posts noted above.
Through this notification, applications are invited for the CSE Preliminary Examination only.
Some Important Highlights of the Selection Procedure
- Once qualified, the candidate will have to apply online again and submit the Detailed Application Form-I [DAF-I] along with scanned documents/certificates for the admission to the Civil Services (Main) Examination.
- The documents/certificates required in support of date of birth, category (viz. SC/ST/ OBC /EWS /PwBD / Ex-Serviceman) and educational qualification with required Examination Fee.
- Before the commencement of Personality Tests (Interviews) of the examination, the candidates who are declared to have qualified Civil Services (Main) Examination, required to fill the on-line Detailed Application Form-II [DAF-II],
- It needs to mandatorily indicate the order of preference only for those services participating in the Civil Services Examination for the year.
- The Service Preference needs to be indicated, including all the Zones and Cadres in the order of preference in their on-line DAF-II.
- In the DAF -II mandatorily upload documents/certificates for higher education, achievements in different fields, service experience, OBC Annexure (for OBC category only), EWS Annexure [for EWS Category only], etc.
Plan of the UPSC CSE Preliminary Examination 2020
The Preliminary Examination is Objective type and is conducted in two shifts and carry a maximum of 400 marks.

Some Highlights
- This examination is meant to serve as a screening test only.
- The marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination by the candidates who are declared qualified for admission to the Main Examination will not be counted for determining their final order of merit.
- The number of candidates to be admitted to the Main Examination will be about twelve to thirteen times the total of the approximate number of vacancies to be filled in the year through this examination.
