  • World University Ranking 2021 is released by the UK-based Times Higher Education (THE).
  • This was the 17th Edition
  • The Times Higher Education group assessed data of 1527 institutions in 93 countries.
  • Last year Times Higher Education group assessed data from 1400 institutions in 92 countries.
  • The number of Indian Institutions also increased to 63 from 56 assessed last year by the agency.
  • THE assigns individual ranks to the top 200 universities, after which it puts them in cohorts.
  • All top 10 institutions in THE World University Ranking 2021  are from the United States and the United Kingdom.

Indian Universities position

  • Two universities among the world's top 400.
  • These are Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru and Indian Institute of Technology Ropar.
  • In the last edition of the World University Rankings, India had three. IIT Indore was the other institute, which finds itself in the 401-500 bracket this year. After these three, India has 15 universities in the 600-800 bracket.
  • Among the ones making their debut from India, the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (Delhi), King George’s Medical University (Lucknow), and the Mahatma Gandhi University (Delhi) ranked highest (601-800 band)

QS World University Ranking

  • Quacquarelii Symonds- A British company specialising in the analysis of Higher Education across the world release this annually.
  • Earlier QC and TH released the ranking jointly. They separated in 2010.
  • QC ranking is the only international ranking to have received the approval of the International Ranking Expert group.
  • It ranks 1000 University across the world.

  • This scheme was launched by Union human resource development (HRD) ministry now Ministry of Education.
  • The main is ti project Indian institutes to global recognition.
  • Institutes selected under IoE will enjoy complete academic and administrative autonomy.
  • 1000 crore will be granted to Public Institutes.
  • N. Gopalaswami headed Empowered Expert Committee will recommend institute under IoE.
  • Eligibility: Higher Educational Institutes under Top-500 of global rankins or Top-50 Under NIRF
  • The private Institutions of Eminence can also come up as greenfield ventures-provided the sponsoring organisation submits a convincing perspective plan for 15 year.
