When a magnesium ribbon is burnt in oxygen it gives Magnesium Oxide which is a white compound accompanied by the emission of light. On the other hand, if the burning ribbon is placed in an atmosphere of nitrogen it produces Magnesium Nitride. Magnesium is a chemical element with the atomic number 12 and the symbol Mg. It is a bright gray metal with a low melting point, low density, and high chemical reactivity.
