Happy 50th Anniversary of the Earth Day 2020: Earth, house for billions and trillions of different organisms is the only habitable planet in our solar system. Earth has formed approximately 4.54 billion years ago and somewhere 1 billion years later complex life first appears on earth. Since then the earth has provided us with every essential resource. To exhibit the gratefulness towards earth today we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Earth Day, 22nd April 2020.

Happy 50th Anniversary of the Earth Day 2020!

What is earth day?

Earth Day is the testimony that one person can establish a global influence in a positive way. More than 193 countries participate in this global event and take the initiative to help the earth replenish the deterioration we have caused.

How did earth day start?

Gaylord Nelson, a US. Senator was the founder of the Earth day. 22nd April 1970 was the first time when the US celebrated the Earth day. In the year 1990, the concept was introduced to the world, where more than 200 million people from 141 different countries came together to embrace the steps taken to help the earth heal. Since then, we dedicate this day to show our support for environmental protection. Today on 22nd April 2020 we mark 50th anniversary of this day.

What is the theme of 50th Earth Day?

  • The theme of Earth day of 2020 is "climate change". We can ourselves feel the constant change in the earth's environment.
  • The effects are very clear and every living being is suffering from the consequences of climate change.
  • From the rise in temperature to sudden rainfalls and storms which is affecting the flora and fauna all around the globe, is the major concern among the environment conservatives. So, to take some form of action towards the issue of climate change this year's Earth Day theme is climate change.
  • All the nations are expected to improve their national involvements to the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change by the end of 2020,
  • In 2019 the theme was "Protect Our Species", considering the major extinction of many flora and fauna species worldwide.

Why is it important to celebrate Earth Day?

From tiniest microorganisms to the humongous animals and trees, earth has been home to all. Celebrating the Earth day is a marker for humanity to check on the steps they take every day, whether they lead to destruction or protection of mother earth.

  • Because of this, we are now focused on preserving the environment and the make it habitable for all the people and wildlife around without discrimination.
  • This day stands as a constant reminder for all of us that the earth is fragile and we can exploit it to only an extent; if the earth falls out of the balance we along with all the other living organisms will be affected simultaneously.
  • This introduces the need for awareness regarding the preservation of nature among the young generations.
  • It will help set up a positive mindset among the young ones that we are not the owners but the tenants of this earth and we should help to conserve it in every possible way.

How can we promote Earth Day?

  • Plant a tree
  • Follow the 5 R's of environment conservation
    – Reduce
    – Reuse
    – Recycle
    – Recover
    – Residual management
  • Do not throw trash, always dispose of it in the right place
  • Say NO to plastics and shift to the reusable materials
  • Use Eco-friendly household products
  • Turn off light when you leave the room
  • Collect the rainwater
  • Go paperless
  • Shift to E-books
  • Add plants to your home, if possible start a small garden
  • Start composting the food and green waste
  • Organize cleanup events on small scale (Would not recommend this for time being, due to the lockdown)

Concluding the article with a Sanskrit shloka which refers to how grateful mother nature is that she forgives us for every step we take on it. Let us make this determination that we will try our best each day to help earth replenish so that we do not just leave a heap of plastic and other waste for our future generations.
