A good citizen is not born, they are made. A good citizen is made by inculcating values such as living in harmony, empathy, respect, solidarity, and critical thinking. Without these and other ethical principles that define us as human beings, it will be difficult for us to build a better world.

THE AIMS OF VALUES EDUCATION

  • It instils moral standards to create a more democratic and civil society
  • It promotes understanding and tolerance beyond our cultural, religious and political differences.
  • It emphasizes human rights, protection of vulnerable group and ethnic minorities and conservation of environment.

TRADITIONAL EDUCATION v. VALUES EDUCATION

  • Both are essential for the personal development of the individual.
  • Both define the objectives of individuals in life.
  • Traditional education teaches us about scientific, social and humanistic knowledge.
  • Value education teaches us that there is no distinction between what happens inside and outside of the classroom.
  • The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) also undertakes a global assessment — as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — of the level of implementation of Global Citizenship Education (GCED) in national education policies, training plans and programmes, teacher training and student assessment.

Objectives of Value Education:

  • To improve human beings’ integral growth.
  • To create attitudes of people towards a sustainable lifestyle.
  • To increase awareness about our cultural heritage and history, our constitutional rights, community development, national integration and environment.
  • To create and develop awareness about the values and their significance and role.
  • To know about the environment and its interactions with various living and non-living organisms.

Characteristics of Value Education

Collective identity

  • Promotes respect and understanding for diversity beyond, for example religious, cultural and ethnic differences.

Global vision

  • Deepens knowledge of world problem and of values such as dignity, equality and justice.

Critical thinking

  • Stimulates systematic and creative analysis to identify different perspectives and angles to problems.

Cooperation

  • Promotes collaboration to find the solution to global problems and defend the collective good.

Social skills

  • Encourage empathy, communication skills, teamwork and interaction with different people.

PRINCIPAL EDUCATIONAL VALUES

Empathy

  • By putting ourselves in other people's shoes both emotionally and cognitively, we improve our ability to understand others opinion and resolve conflicts.

Equal opportunities

  • Equal opportunities to everyone fosters social inclusion and community life and it is one of the pillars of a democratic society.

Respect for the environment

  • The value education makes an individual aware of the impact of our actions on the environment and planet and instils in us a respect for nature.

Care for health

  • By right attitude, an individual can minimise health risks and tackle health education from a personal, dynamic, and collective point of view.

Critical thinking

  • Critical thinking makes an individual more observant and analytical. It further teaches us to solve problems and recognise quality information.

VALUES EDUCATION METHODOLOGIES

The most common teaching method strategies in values education include the following:

  • The enlivening debate on moral matters like leadership or collaboration and rejection of discrimination.
  • Doing away with harmful attitudes for society as a whole without stigmatising individuals.
  • Stressing on the idea that we all can bring change in ourself and society and that we deserve a second chance.
